Accessing the Server

To access email from your Octeportal domain you need to use an Email Client.   This is a software application which sends and receives mail to and from the server.  Each Email Client has to be configured to access your mailbox.

You will have been provided with the configuration settings when you opened your account.   If you have forgotten them please send and email to help.octeportal@4ql.co.uk or, if you are unable send any mail, call the phone number shown on the left (08700 660289).

The settings you need are:

Incoming Server   This is where your mail is kept until you are ready to access it.
Outgoing Server  This is where all the mail you send is delivered to be forwarded to its ultimate destination.
Email Address  The address people send email to you with.
This is also used as the login to access the incoming and outgoing servers.  This is always lower case.
Password  The password you use to access the servers.   This is always case sensitive.

Mail Handling Protocol

As well as details to access your server you also need to consider how you are going to manage the emails you receive.

POP3

This is by far the most common.   Your mail client moves all your messages from the server onto your computer.  This means they are no longer on the server, your mailbox is emptied and ready to receive more mail.

IMAP

Since POP3 actually removes your mail from the server it is not suitable where you want to access your mail from different computers.

The IMAP protocol keeps all your mail on the server so you can access it from anywhere.   When you access the server it makes a mirror image of all your mail in the computer.   Each time you Send/Receive mail this mirror image is updated so mail you have created is sent and any new mail is copied to your computer.
