Page Administration

OverView

Your website can contain pages which everyone sees, pages which only signed in members see, hidden pages and pages which only appear in menus.

By default OctEportal has one public page - the 'Home' page - and several hidden pages which are the administration pages.  This section describes how to organise the pages on your website to take advantage of these features.

Managing Website Pages

Reorganising the Page (Menu) Order

You can reorganise which pages appear on the main menu, or in sub menus, in which order they appear, etc by re-arranging the tree of pages.  The tree is displayed when you select Pages from the Admin menu.

Page Tree

Use the [-] and [+] buttons to collapse and expand the tree as necessary.

Moving a page:To move a page click it and drag it to the new position.  A faint line marker will show you where it will be placed.  To make a page a sub-page of another drag it and drop it on to the 'parent' page.  A [-] will be shown next to the parent.

Click  to open the selected page directly

Click  to add a new page under the selected page - see below for the options

Click  to open the page options for a selected page - see below for options

Deleting a page

Warning - you cannot undo this!

Login as administrator.

Go to the page

Click Edit. Scroll to the bottom of the page and Click Delete. Click  to confirm.  The page will be deleted.  You cannot recover it.

Adding or Editing or a Web page

Obviously you can't add content unless you have a page to which to add it.

Adding a web page: Log in as administrator - that is, with administrator privileges

From the panel at the top select Pages: Add

Editing a Page: Login and click Edit

If a page is similar to one that already exists, open that page, and click Copy. Then make the changes to the page essentials

**Note** The form which opens is entitled TAB Management.  This is historical.  For 'Tab' read 'Page'

Page Essentials

This portion sets up the page so you can find it again.  We've used the details for one of the reference pages - on the module editor.

Page Essentials

Page name: Give the page a name - it will be used as the page ID. The ID will be what is referred to, NOT the page name, when creating links etc.  That means you can change the page name without having to worry whether you've found all the places you refered to that page.  See Page Identity further down for an example

Parent Page: Select which page it will appear under in the menu (its Parent).  If this is a top-level page, leave the box as <Not Specified>

Page Skin: Select the page skin - what it will look like.  If you do not select a page skin the default will be that of the site.  The list will include the skin which you designed for your site

If you want any changes to the page to be notified to subscribers tick the RSS box.  The default is OFF

Search Engine

This portion defines how search engine spiders (that is the small program which scans your web pages) such as Google and Microsoft will see your page and what information they can extract in terms of key words and description etc.  This area is important for improving your rankings and optimisation.

Page Search Engine

The title, description and key words are incorporated into the page as Meta Data - that is they describe your page.

Allow Indexing: if this is not ticked the search engine spider will not examine this page.  The default is ON

Follow Links: When indexing your page, if ticked, and there are any links on it, the search spider will follow tose links.  The default is ON

Page Statistics

You can collect statistics about your individual pages by siging up for one of the statistical services.  Currently OctEportal supports Stat Counter andGoogle Analytics.  This will supplement the statistics you may be collecting for the site as a whole.  If you do not have site statistics, then this applies only to this particular page

Site Statistics

Sign up, select the provider and enter your code.  If you want to stop collecting statistics on this page for a period tick the 'No Statistics' box.

Page Meta Tags

You may want to provide information about your page, or portions of it, or may need to verify the page with other providers such as Google, or payPal etc.  Enter the tag information in the box as described, or just copy and paste the provided tag directly into the box.

Page Meta Tags

Page Menu Settings

If you want to personalise, or hide menu items, or link them not to pages but other places you can do that in this portion.

Icon: You can'prefix' the menu entry with a small image (icon).  Use the  to locate the file.  The file format must be .jpg, gif, or .png.  We suggest it is no more than 24px by 24px (the size of the arrow!)

Menu Colours: The colours should overwrite the skin values.  The colour must be in an HTML format (prefix with #, two character HEX red green, blue components) - in our example pure red (#FF0000) and white (#FFFFFF)

Hide Menu Item: Tick if you do not want this page to appear in the public menu (only available to members, etc.).  The default is OFF

Menu Item Only:  This page has no content but is required for other purposes (e.g. specially placed menus) or links elsewhere.  The default is OFF

Menu Item Link: Tick if you want this item to link elswehere.  The default is OFF, that is, you will be directed to the content on this page. If ticked, select the type of link required and type in the required link information.  Make sure the link exists!  We suggest you copy and paset the link to the page/url/file.

Link Delay:   Normally there is no delay when moving to a new link.  However, there may be times when you need to hold back - loading videos, or requiring a warning page to display for a set time.  If you set a link delay you must not have Menu Item Only checked.

Page Role Settings

This portion allows you to set who can (or cannot) see or administer the page and its contents.  The list of 'Available' roles will depend on the standard set provided by OctEportal, plus any others you may have created.  Only those 'Assigned' can actually make changes.  Be aware the permissions for a module on  a page will override any set for the page as a whole.

Move one  or all  of the roles between Available and Assigned using the left and right arrowed buttons.  By default the page can always be viewed by everyone, but only edited by Administrators

Page Role Setting

Page Display Times

You may want to only show a page between specific dates - say a publlic holiday, or a special offer.  Page Display Times

Display Period: Set the start date (and optionally time) and end date (and optionally time).  These dates are inclusive.  By default the page is always displayed (unless the menu items say otherwise!).  Whislt only one period can be set at a time, you an always come back and reset it later.

Redirect To: You may also want the page to be redirected to another page if it is not displayed.  Pick the page to send it to from the list

Page Identity

This is the internal 'name' of the page.  If you want to enter and go to a specific page on your website use this 'name' + '.aspx'  For example to go to the reference page about Pages (this one) you would use the URL http://www.octeportal.co.uk/Pages1.aspx

Page Identity

OctEportal replaces spaces in the page name with '-'.  If a page with the same name (and hence ID) already exists, the ID will have the next sequential number added.  In this case there is already a 'Pages' ID so it is renamed 'Pages1'.  A name like 'My Home Page' would have an ID of 'My-Home-Page'.  You can change the ID, but will be warned if it already exists.
